The Power of Yet
“...but I’m not very good at that……………yet!” - Some genius kid somewhere. 🙂
“Yet” might be the most powerful word there is. Just by adding only one tiny word to an otherwise self-defeatist statement, you get an entirely different meaning. It is such a simple mindset hack that it should be more commonly used, but it isn’t.
It is easy to pick on ourselves and be critical. It is almost too easy. It is even easier to find the fault in others. We can so easily take someone down with our words, but we can also build them up with only three letters.
The Power of Yet lies in its inherent ability to hope. We hope we can be better. We can hope we can be great. We might not all be able to be LeBron James or Sandra Day O'Connor, but those are some pretty cool targets to shoot for. We’re not failing to get there. We just aren’t there …yet.
Just like we are trying to be Better Than Yesterday, we are always working towards those lofty goals. There’s nothing wrong with “shooting for the moon, only to end up in the stars.” The only crime is believing we can’t get there at all.
Share a little hope with your students today and help them see that they are on the way to being great. Give them the Power of Yet to turn a negative feeling into a beacon of hope.
We might not be able to achieve all of our dreams, but there is no need to give up on them just yet.
