Show me the Hook
I really enjoyed when the teacher lectured the whole class. - No student ever.
Some of us have a way with words. Some of us are enthralling with our stories and command of information. Most of us don’t have the oration skills to pull off magic like that. Even those folks could stand to get the students involved, collaborating and being active in their learning.
What those folks do have that others can cultivate is the ability to hook students and bring them in. Anyone can excite a room of kids and lead them on a quest down the many rabbit holes in history, literature, or other.
There is no way science class could ever be boring in terms of content. How cool is our world and all the things in it? Infitintely cool. It is up to us to take that cool and run with it.
I agree handwriting or diagraming sentences could be a little more tedious than the innards of a worm but I bet you there are thousands of folks that can make those 2 items memorable.
We have the greatest jobs and the greatest responsibility of keeping the love of learning alive. Better yet, we get to play in that job every day. If we want to.
How cool is that?
So cool.
Run your next lesson through the hook machine. What is amazing about what they are learning? How can it start with a bang, with a mystery or with an experiment? How can it make them wonder? How can it make them giggle?
What would make it fun for you? Do that. They’ll love it too.
Have fun today!
