Show me the Feedback Loop

The greatest thing a teacher has done for me and my learning would be allowing retakes/resubmitting assignments. This allows me to fix my mistakes on what I did wrong, especially when they give me feedback on how to fix and make it stronger. - Cindy

This is essentially the most basic of the student-teacher relationship.  The teacher shows the student something, the student tries to understand and shows understanding, and then the teacher gives feedback. The power in the process is allowing the student to go back and fix it to then make it  better.

We can leave the conversation of changing grades aside and focus strictly on the learning.  The student gets the benefit of progress.  The student gets to see a model then practice what it means to draft and redraft their work.

That is such an underutilized skill.  Most of modern schooling is an assessment of what the student knows at this particular time and then you move on to the next.  It makes sense because there is so much to get through but depth of knowledge is rarely achieved in the conveyor belt method.

When can we allow the student to get into the feedback loop until they truly understand and can use that understanding in new ways?  When do they get to see that thought through to its completion?

Hopefully it is today, in your class, in this unit, and with the opportunity to keep improving towards mastery.
