Show Me How to Get Back on Track
I have to say the greatest thing a teacher has ever done for me is giving me the opportunity to catch up on my coursework without having to drop me out of the class or fail me. This happened my senior year of high school, when I was really struggling with one of my classes, and it was a class I ended up neglecting. My teacher worked with me to make sure I caught up with the rest of the class and made sure I would pass. - Erika
Whether you believe in make-up work or not, the sentiment is the same. Teachers give more that they have to because they care more than they have to.
We never want to see a student fail, and we are usually forgiving of a student that recognizes their inconsistencies and tries to make amends. That act of trying to get back up after falling behind is what we want to reward and not the idea that they can always turn things in when they like, without consequences.
It is the thing they will most likely need in life over the content of the lesson. Teaching them to persevere, to make things up, and then to not slip back again is one of the greatest gifts we can give our students.
We want to teach them deadlines, but we also want to model compassion. Hopefully they learn to appreciate that and not abuse it.
Most students do learn to respect themselves, their work, and their teacher’s time, but only if we give them a chance to live in that situation.
How can you help a student take the right next step again today? How can you get them back on track?
We know you will do it, and everyone is grateful for it.
