Share Your Interests with Me

The greatest thing a teacher has ever done for me was take the time to talk with me and understand my interests. She made time to have real conversations with us and genuinely wanted to help however she could. It never felt forced or like something she had to do. She gave us advice and shared information about local events and opportunities that matched our interests. -Saul

Like the greatest songs are often the simplest, so sometimes they are the greatest lessons.  Some days the students will be ready for the lesson of the day, and other times they will need something a little more simple.

Sometimes they just need to hear about something that feels real to them, something they can connect to, that makes sense in their limited experience. Most of the time that something is someone, and it is you.

These moments are all we remember as we get older. We know we learned a lot because we can do all of the things that we were taught now, even if not perfectly, but we typically only remember the powerful moments.

Sure, you can recall diagraming sentences and long division, but likely only because you didn’t like them and they seared a memory. Most of what you remember are the people, the connections, and the unique experiences.

Shooting the breeze with your favorite teacher is something you never forget, when the connection is made. Don’t be afraid to drop “the lesson” for a bigger lesson in life, trust, or pure joy.
