I Believe the Children Are Our Future
I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be - Whitney Houston
Whitney was not wrong. They are our future, and the sooner they see how wonderful they are, how great they can be, and we give them the strength to lead, the sweeter our life will be as well. We are simultaneously paying back all we have received and paying forward all we hope will be.
When our students become those wonderful citizens we are molding them into, they will be caring for the world that we are (hopefully) retiring into. That world only works if those kids really do reach their potential.
It’s an odd thing to think of taking care of all our students and helping them grow just for the selfish reason of being taken care of later in life, but it is just as good of a reason as us doing it for their sake. When they win, we all win.
How can we do anything less?
We can’t. They need our help and we need their help. There is no other way around it. As we step into our classrooms today, maybe put on some Whitney and sing along (or maybe not), just keep in mind that we are doing more than just writing or fractions. More than just getting through the day.
We are building the future, and it is the greatest joy and responsibility.
Seize the day!
